Erebus records first demo at DNA I recorded a 3 song demo with symphonic metal band Erebus. The band members are just out of high school, and I was impressed with their chops. Very challenging music. The New Album Dullhead From Squarewave Squarewave is the new project from Jeff Jagielo who was one of the guiding forces behind the much loved Madison Band Ivory Library. I mastered the album here at DNA Studios. Jeff recorded the album at home, and he has created a very imaginative, haunting, and contempory record. Isthmus likes it too. Listen to songs and buy Dullhead at CD Baby Hot Tunes from Kalo Check the latest tracks from Kalo, produced by Kalo and yours truly. Hear them and more over at the North Coast Entertainment site. I have been busy doing music production for Apple Computer
New Loops for Sony I have been producing loops for Sony recently, you can hear my work on the latest versions of ACID Pro and ACID Music Studio Studio Notes
I have been busy for the past few months doing assorted audio and music production for Apple Computer, which is nice.
Sony Pictures Sound Effect Series Sony has just released a five cd set of amazing sound effects. I was one of the main editors on the project. I found it particually interesting editing "vintage" sound effects from old MGM cartoons! The debut album from Kalo is Finished
Kalo, producer Spectac and myself finished the long awaited debut CD 'He Cold' from Milwaukee rapper Kalo.
Working with Kalo and Spectac has been a rewarding and creative experience. The album is hardcore rap, with
with a tight rhymes and unique sound, quite unlike anything else. Very direct and powerful. Listen to a track.
Remix of Mary J. Blige's new Single "Love @1st Sight" for ACID Planet. I prepared the starting remix and the loop content for one of ACID Planet's remix contest. This was a fun one for me, because I had only the vocal track, and using my own loops and loops from the Sonic Foundry collection I built up the track...I got to do whatever I wanted! You gotta take those opportunities when they come! Studio Notes
Geez, I've been busy and haven't kept up, so I'm just going to list a bunch of projects with no regard
for grammar, composition or order of importance!
New sounds from Brian Daly for Apple's new Soundtrack software I spent the a couple of months this past spring in Cupertino CA working for Apple Computer. They hired me to do a variety of projects related to the release of their new loop based composition software. I created a bunch of loops for the initial loop set (it comes with over 4000 loops!), did some consulting on the software design, and wrote some music for Soundtrack's debut at NAB this year. Dna's Paulie heenan and the multi-talanted Chris Boeger helped out with the last stages of the loop set preparation here at dna Studios. READ MORE NEWS! Two of my songs are winners in the 2002 Madison Songwriters Contest! Listen to the songs! When Will You and Around Me Heavy. Note: the mp3's on this site are at 128kb/sec. If don't have high speed internet, you can right click on the link (on the pc, not sure about mac) and select "save target as" to save to your computer. Recent Recording Projects: I've been working with the following artists as of late (in no particular order):Amelia Royko recorded a three song demo at dna...Fresh from his role in unseating the former governor of WI Scott Mcallum with his song "Leaving on a State Plane", Peter Leidy recorded a couple more of his satirical tunes...I mixed the new album "Rockstar" by Madison avant garde jazz group Tomato Box...Milwaukee rapper Kalo is continuing work on his forthcoming cd... Recent Mastering Projects:

ACIDPlanet remixes with Garbage, New Order, Boz Scaggs
I have been preparing the audio content for the popular ACID remix contests on Sonic Foundry's www.acidplanet.com. Over the past few months I have remixed tracks by Garbage, New Order, Boz Scaggs, Static X, Chainsaws and Children, and Lil John and the Eastside Boyz.
My Loops for ACID 8 pack is being featured on Sonic Foundry's ACIDPlanet website. You can get the 8-pack and a free version of ACID there through Feb 6th. It features loops from my Hydroponic Hip-Hip library. Listen to the Hydroponic Demo Song. There is also a special on myMetarock Visions library. Sonic Foundry releases Hydroponic Hip-Hop Loops For ACID Library Sonic Foundry has released my second loops for ACID Library. I was inspired to make this library by hip-hop artists like Timbaland and Outkast who make music that is unrivaled for it's sonic imagination. So this is my own flava of hip-hop, and I had a blast making it. Some of my favorite clients contributed vocals: Kalo, Mr. Parker (Smokin' with Superman) and The Anti. You can buy Hydroponic Hip_Hop here and listen to the Hydroponic Demo Song Here. For anyone who doesn't have ACID, it's the coolest music software ever.My first ACID library Metarock Visions is also available from sonic foundry. Kristine Pettersen releases "Necessary Accessories" Christines second release is her first full length CD. It features her lovely voice, energetic guitar playing and beautiful Cello by Helen Marguerite. Christine writes songs of passion and protest and sings straight from her heart. Recording Notes! While we are constructing, I've been recording in my cozy little home studio: Kristine Peterssen is back recording a full length CD to be released this summer...Another fantastic singer songwriter, Amelia Royko, has been working with me on some preliminary demos for an album project we plan to start on in the fall...Peter Leidy has been recording some of his humorous songs for a self released CD and Milwaukee rapper Kalo continues work on his innovative rap with producer Spectac and yours truly programming the beats. A New Studio for Madison! I have a new partner on a cool new project: the construction of a fabulous recording studio on the East Side of Madison. My partner is the talented producer/engineer Mark Whitcomb, who has been a pillar of the Madison music scene through his work as a staff engineer at Sleepless Nights Studios and as the proprietor of The Space. We are building a truly professional facility with great gear that will be affordable for artists of all levels. Our as of yet un-named facility will open this June and features two studios; A large tracking room with three iso booths, and an overdub/midi/mastering studio which will be decked out with all the latest software and Midi equipment. Construction photos! Smokin' With Superman has released "Full Price". This is their first full length and I was honored to be the co-producer and engineer on it. The album captures the bands highly musical brand of funk, pop and rap with a sound that is both polished and raw. We recorded in various Madison studios including Butch Vig's Smart Studios. I mixed at my home studio in January and it was released in February. It has been selling well and garnering rave reviews. We are all quite proud! Buy it here!. Mastering Notes
I mastered the debut release of the Coma Savants, who have changed their name from the Your Mom SRO. The band is led by keyboardist and songwriter Stephanie Rearick. She pens sophisticated pop songs that the band twists and filters through its own style of psychedelic groove art damage jamming. The record is very cool, with innovative production by Chicago recordist Ed Reardon. Find out more at www.thecomasavants.com. Recording Smokin' With Superman! at Smart Studios We tracked basics for seven more songs at Smart Studios in September. It was very cool to record Smokin' With Superman on Smarts fine sounding new/old Trident A-Range console. The band smoked as usual, and we got a lot done in a short time. Overdubs are continuing at Optisonic. We are aiming to be finished with all the recording/mixing/mastering by the end of the year. The CD will be released in February. e Mastering Notes
Madison singer songwriter and Your Mom SRO bandleader Stephanie Rearick has released her second solo CD, The Long Picnic, on Uvulittle Records. It was recorded by Studio Earth Remote in Madison and Edward Reardon in Chicago. I mastered it at Optisonic. The album features Stephanie's accomplished singing and piano playing. It is a beautiful and haunting work from beginning to end. Buy it here.
ACIDPlanet remixes with Garbage, New Order, Boz Scaggs I have been preparing the audio content for the ACID remix contests on Sonic Foundry's www.acidplanet.com. These popular contests feature a set of ACID loops that are cut from a song by a major label artist. The user downloads the loops and a sample remix along with a free version of Sonic Foundry's ACID software. Over the past few months I have made the loops and remixes for Garbage, New Order, Boz Scaggs, Static X, Chainsaws and Children, and Lil John and the Eastside Boyz. It has been very interesting to disassemble and re-assemble these tracks; I like to see how other people do it. An Auspicious debut for The New Black My brand new band performed at Café Montmartre on July 6 and it was rather sublime, if I don't say so myself. The New Black has been formed from the ashes of my last project Beady Process. The personnel for the show include Mark Whitcomb on bass, Andrew Rohn on drums, Theodore Weigl on guitar, Amelia Royko on guitar, percussion and voice. I sang lead and played guitar. DJ Puzzle opened and closed the evening with freaky modern electronica, and we performed with a backdrop of ambient video created by Madison multi-media artist Scott Pauli (a.k.a. Polymer Design). The music is rock, with a free flowing primal undercurrent...it was dark, loud and fun. Here's a photo. I hope to have some new material recorded soon. In the meantime you can check out one of my songs, Hear That Sound. Cutting tracks with Smokin' With Superman! I'm excited to be recording with one of the Mid-West's most slammin' funk acts. We've tracked basics for five songs with engineer Mark Whitcomb at the Space. I'm doing overdubs at Optisonic and it's sounding great. Eventually these should come out on a full length CD sometime in the fall. SWS is a band comprised of all great players, which makes my job a total pleasure. Check out some photos of the sessions! Kristene Pettersen records her first EP I recorded and mixed a five song demo/ep with Madison singer songwriter Kristene Petersen in June. We worked in the casual environment of my Optisonic Studios, and had a very relaxed and fruitful experience. Mostly the tracks are just voice and guitar, which we recorded at the same time. Madison musician Mathew Sanborn came in and added some tasty bass to the song Magic, you can check it out on my samples page. Kristene has an amazingly pure voice, and her songs truly come from the heart. Loops for ACID News
Sonic Foundry has just release my Loops for ACID library Metarock Visions. It was very satisfying to create my own library from Scratch. It is a modern rock construction kit, and features Guitar, Bass, Drum and Synthesizer loops. I mostly recorded it at my Optisonic Studios, and recorded the drums with Mark Whitcomb at the Space. Mastering Notes!
I had the pivilege of mastering CDs for two highly creative Midwestern based indie bands recently. Big Big Furnace's “Soundtrack for a Midwestern Winter” has been released on Crustacean Records. The album was recorded by Wendy Schneider at Coney Island Studios and positively oozes with big hooks and integrity! New Orchestral loop Libraries from Sonic Foundry I recently finished mixing, editing and assembly on four new Loops for ACID libraries that will be released in January. The libraries are each representative of a different style of orchestral music: Classical, Modern Orchestral, Rock and Pop, and Cinematic. The orchestra was recorded in Moscow. I mixed the tracks, and then assembled a team of editors to help cut the loops. This was an international project through and through: the composers Michael Mshensky and Dmitrj Kourliandsky …are Russian,. the executive producer, Bil Bryant of PowerFX systems, is based in Sweden, and the editors are from the US and Europe. By using the internet, I was able to keep a smooth flow of data to and from the editors, and keep track of their progress without ever having to leave the comfort of my studio! Milwaukee rapper Kalo's demo For the last two years I’ve enjoyed doing midi programming, recording and production with up and coming rapper Kalo and his producer Spectac. Every other week or so we have done a short session in my Optisonic studios, and lo and behold we’ve now got six songs completed, with two more in progress. Several of the songs have already received heavy airplay on WKPO 105.9 and A&R representatives at Jive and other top labels are eagerly awaiting the latest masterpieces by this innovative Mid-West rapper. Honor Among Thieves release “The Blue God” The Thieves latest disc is a collaboration with noted cartoonist P.S. Mueller. I had the honor of mastering the disc for them at my Optisonic Studios. “The Blue God” was recorded and mixed by Steve Gotcher at Audio for the Arts and has been receiving rave reviews from Isthmus, Wisconsin State Journal, Madison Magazine and other area publications. It is available in Madison record stores and online at www.uvulittle.com/hat. Mixed a song for E-OR I mixed a track, Destroy Angel ,for my friends in E-OR, a Madison based techno pop group. New theme music for Pigorsh Media Design Pigorsh Media Design is one of the top media design firms in the Mid-West. I'm honored to be composing custom music for their demo reel. |
